Obituary of Barbara JoAnn Payne

Barbara “JoAnn” Payne, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on December 6, 2023, surrounded by cherished loved ones at her home. Born on September 17, 1935, in the heart of North Dakota, JoAnn lived a life defined by love, kindness, and unwavering strength. While her husband Miles was in the Air Force, they lived in many places and traveled the world. Her love working in the church was unmatched, and she was big part of the Altar committee at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. JoAnn was a 35 year dedicated employee at Carroll University, starting in 1980 as the Secretary in the Public Relations Office, advancing to the Assistant to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement.  She retired in 2015.

JoAnn was the proud mother of Stephen (Sandy Anderson-Payne) Payne grandchildren: Christopher (Kayla Moore) Payne, Carolyn (Patrick Stevens) Payne. Siblings: Richard (Phyllis) Erickson, Beth (Monte) Cole, Alan (Jeanette) Erickson, brother-in-law Earl Bailey and other relatives and friends. Barbara's journey was marked by a profound and enduring love. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Miles, with whom she shared countless moments of joy, laughter, and partnership. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment, and  JoAnn carried the memory of their time together in her heart. She was also preceded in death by her parents Alzada and Stephen, daughter Stacey, twin infant daughters, and sister Jeanne.

A woman of grace and warmth, JoAnn touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her nurturing spirit and genuine kindness created a welcoming atmosphere wherever she went. JoAnn is also known for her countless card games and baking skills.  Family and friends found solace in her presence, and her home was a sanctuary of love and hospitality. Services for JoAnn will be held at a later date.
