Hi family of Derek,
My name is Thomas Matson and I have camped with Derek for two weeks. One week at NYLT and the other at the high adventure shooting camp. In those two weeks Derek was kind to everyone and I loved spending time with him. I am lucky to have been with him in those two weeks and I am deeply sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege of getting to know Derek as his 7th grade language arts teacher at ACMS. Derek was an avid reader who also liked to talk about the books he was reading. As an 8th grader, Derek continued to stop by during passing time to share what he was currently reading or just make a silly comment or joke. He always brought a smile to my face.
One visual memory I have of Derek, that I will forever cherish, is from 7th grade in my classroom. Early on, Derek brought a small blanket from home to keep in my closet and bring out during quiet reading time. During our 30 minutes of quiet reading, Derek would wrap himself up in the blanket and lay smack in the middle of the rug, on his stomach, to read. Yes, he took up most of the space on the carpet! I loved that he was so comfortable in my class and in himself to wrap up and read.
Derek will always be a student I will remember for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his warm heart. He brought me such joy for the short time I knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Brian,
I cannot fathom the emotions you are enduring. I am sorry for your loss and send every bit of love, strength and hope to your entire family. Please let me know however I may come to aid. The words written of Derek's life remind me of the man you are and I remember from the days past. I sincerely hope every minute of life was savored and that every moment moving forward finds peace from passing sorrow.
