Obituary of Thomas P. Handford

Thomas Paul Handford, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, passed away at home on September 19, 2019 at the age of 79, with family by his side.

Tom was born in Madison on July 25, 1940, to the late Eugene and Marie (Knabe)Handford.  He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne and brother-in-law, Richard Knitter.

 

Tom graduated from Madison East High School and was part of the State Championship Basketball team in 1958.  He continued is education at UW-Madison for his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Kinesiology and Physical Education.  He had many fond memories of being the catcher for the baseball team and was active throughout his life as a member of the National W Club.

 

Tom began his teaching career in Waukesha.  In addition, Tom taught drivers education, founded the orienteering program, coaching softball among other teams. He was a member of Land of Lakes Baseball Semi Pro and managed for many years.  Tom was passionate about being outdoors, playing golf, long time member of the YMCA, spending time with family and volunteering in the community.  A lifetime member of St. Mark’s Church, he served in many capacities in which he was passionate.

 

Tom is survived by his wife, love of his life, Karen Kay (Natvig) of 56 years.  He is also survived by his children; Kyle of Adams, Kristin and her sons, Liam and Kelan of Oconomowoc, and Kurt (Ann) and their daughter, Stephanie of Waukesha; and by many faithful nieces, nephews and their families.  

 

Special thank you to the wonderful staff at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

 

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church,  424 Hyde Park Avenue, Waukesha.  A memorial gathering will begin at 10am until the service at 11:30am. Pastor Andrew Fetters will be presiding.
